Swift Transportation, established in 1966, has 22,000 employees and drives two billion miles per year for its customers. They proudly haul for some of the most respected companies in the world - which enables them to provide the freight and the miles for drivers to become financially successful. Exceptional drivers have helped Swift to win many “Carrier of the Year” awards from companies such as Wal-Mart, Quaker Oats, Ryder Logistics, FedEx, Target, Dollar Tree, Lowe’s, and Rite Aid. That’s quite a haul. Swift Driving Academy, a part of Swift Transportation, helps individuals interested in driving trucks jump-start their careers.

The Challenge

Swift Driving Academy in San Antonio, Texas, one of six locations nationwide, offers students a comprehensive truck driving program with job placement within the organization. Swift invests heavily in students, so it’s critical to ensure the right individuals are enrolled in the right programs. Joe Stone, Academy Director at the San Antonio location, needed a solution to improve student admissions and retention, to ensure Swift’s investment was worthwhile. They have to meet compliance standards and avoid fines by thoroughly managing all their paperwork.

The Solution

Stone’s experience as an independent operator and driving instructor helped him understand that applicants would need to fit a required set of skills. This drove Stone to Wonderlic, and the implementation of the Scholastic Level Exam into the academy’s admissions process.

The Results

The addition of the Wonderlic assessment to their vetting system really revved their engine.  “Since we started using the Scholastic Level Exam for general admissions, our retention rates have increased dramatically. We’ve already saved roughly $26,000 in training costs alone,” Stone says. With increased retention and decreased training costs, Swift Driving Academy just keeps on truckin’.
