The Challenge

Cassy Timken, CVPM, CCRA has been the practice administrator for the Tampa Bay Animal & Bird Hospital since 1995. In the mid-2000s, the company was having trouble keeping employees. She needed a better method to analyze applicants she was considering bringing on board.

The Solution

Timken began using cognitive ability and personality assessments from Wonderlic in 2007, hoping that combination could help identify the candidates who were good fits for Tampa Bay Animal & Bird Hospital. The Wonderlic analyses have helped her determine what a candidate’s propensity for work is, and how stable of an employee they will be. two very important characteristics of staff members at the hospital says Timken, who’s saved vast amounts of time and money training and processing new hires.“We used to experience 70 percent turnover - now, we’re down to less than 30 percent,”

The Results

After watching that turnover rate dip dramatically, Timken is a firm believer in the assessments’ predictability and accuracy. “When we ignored what the tests say, we ended up having issues,” she says. “We made up excuses because we liked the applicants – maybe they don’t test well, maybe something happened – but we’ve learned that we should rely more on the test results and less on what our instincts are telling us.” Aside from simply serving as reinforcement for choosing the right candidate, Timken appreciates the speed of the results and how easy the assessments are to administer.
